It took me a couple of minutes to whip up this display layout for my Android phone:

Forte allows me to do this (I believe Mainstage doesn't), but the problem is that it only displays the global preset name, so I have no text anywhere that tells me what patch is on my top board.Р В РІР‚СњР вЂ™Р’В®nter TouchOSC. I want to change the top board zones on the fly, independent of 'global' preset on lower board. But I don't want the presets to affect the patch on my 32-key top board. Now I need presets for the patches of my 88-key bottom board, because splits and layers. My host is Brainspawn Forte, which uses presets ('scenes'). In my case, it solved a problem that was vexing me for a long time. Only better, because it's so customizable! It's the closest approach to the LCD screen/LEDs of flagship workstations. Laptop rigs are far more flexible than any hardware workstation out there but the real info is on a big-ass laptop screen, not the LCD of your controller.! I won't go into the several approaches to get around this, but instead jump straight to why the TouchOSC route is the best: Hardware boards have a nice LCD screen right above the keys which gives you all the info you need, like patch name, etc. It removes the biggest functional shortcoming of laptop rigs: lack of visual feedback. But unlike a conventional controller, your host can send text, (patch/preset names, etc), and parameter values to the display. You can use the touchscreen controls exactly like a hardware MIDI controller's.

The communication with the host is bidirectional.

The app communicates with your host not via MIDI, but via OSC (think: MIDI on steroids over networks) over a Wi-Fi connection.

You use the editor to create your own custom interface: add any number of text labels/rotary encoders/faders/buttons/XY pads in your own custom layout on your tablet/smartphone.

The Solution: TouchOSC: An app for both iOS and Android.

You'd like to add controls like knobs/faders/buttons/XY pads to your rig, in a custom layout.

You'd like a quick, touch-friendly means of selecting/swtiching patches.

You'd like a small compact, custom display in front of you with all the information you need about patches, parameters, etc.

You're using a laptop/Mac Mini/rackmount PC live.

Background: In a recent thread, recently pointed me in the direction of an incredibly useful app that's turned out to be a major game changer for my rig, and I thought I'd share it here.
